H.M.S. L 21 was one of thirty-five "L" class submarines completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
On 23 November, 1923, a Court of Enquiry determined that L 52's Lt. Cdr. Frank D. Morris was to blame for a collision with L 21.
In March, 1925 she, L 11 and L 22 comprised Group "E" Submarines in Reserve at Portsmouth under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Arthur Laugham Noakes.[6]
Commissioned at Portsmouth on 13 November, 1925.[7]
From at least mid-1927 until at least early 1929, she was with the First Submarine Flotilla in the Mediterranean.[8][9]
By mid-1931, she had been transferred to the Second Submarine Flotilla,[10] where she remained until at least mid-1934.[11]
She was commissioned at Portsmouth on 9 September, 1935.[12]
The submarine was reduced to Reserve on 8 January, 1936.[13]
In 1938, L 21's bell was among a number of ships' bells the Royal Navy offered for sale to officers and others interested. It commanded a price of between £3-£10 plus packing and shipping. Interested parties were to apply to win one at its stated price, stating any special attachment or claim they had to the item(s) applied for.[14]
