An Inclinometer is a device for estimating the inclination of a target ship (the angle between its heading and the line of sight) by relating its range to its length to the angle subtended at the point of the observing instrument.

As the war progressed, difficulties realised in the attempt to base fire control and torpedo control on rangefinder ranges alone impelled the Royal Navy to explore use of the measure of inclination as an alternative.
