H.M.S. Mastiff (1871)
Builder: Armstrong, Whitworth & Company[1]
Launched: 4 Apr, 1871[2]
Sold: 28 Nov, 1931[3]

H.M.S. Mastiff was one of six Ant class gunboats completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

In April, 1890, Mastiff was at Portsmouth, as a tender to the gunnery training school H.M.S. Excellent under Gunner James Benjamin Manners, though he is not expressly noted as being "in Command".

Mastiff would spend most of her career at Portsmouth as a tender to Excellent.[4][5]

She was renamed Snapper in early 1914 to clear her original name for a new destroyer, and was on the Sale List by early 1915.[6] However, in May 1919, Snapper was still among 33 obsolete ships awaiting sale.[7]
