H.M.S. Rattlesnake (1886)
Builder: Lairds[1]
Laid down: 16 Nov, 1885[2]
Launched: 11 Sep, 1886[3]
Completed: May, 1887[4]

The torpedo gunboat H.M.S. Rattlesnake was completed for the Royal Navy in 1887 — her first of this type of vessel.

Service

Rattlesnake participated in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890 under the command of Commander Henry D. Barry as part of a Reserve Fleet of the force representing the Royal Navy, headquartered in the Downs.[6]

Rattlesnake participated in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1891 under the command of Lieutenant Frederick Tower Hamilton. These ended on 5 August, and on the 27th, the T.B.D. was paid off out of commission at Portsmouth, passing into the A Division of the Steam Reserve.[7]

In April, 1896, she was transferred from A Division to B Division of the Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth to receive her annual overhaul.[8]

Specially commissioned at Portsmouth on 15 June, 1897 for service with the mobilized fleet.[9]

She was one of twenty torpedo gunboats assembled alongside a great many other vessels at Spithead on 22 June 1897 for the Jubilee Review.[10]
