H.M.S. Aurora was one of 7 armoured cruisers of the Orlando class.
Service
Aurora participated in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890 under the command of either Arthur D. Fanshawe or William Wiseman (their Service Records contradict a newspaper account) as part of the Hostile Fleet tasked with threatening British trade routes. Immortalité was the other ship in this command ambiguity.[6]
Captains
Dates of appointment are provided when known.
- Captain Thomas S. Jackson, 18 July, 1889[7] – 14 September, 1889[8] (for Annual Manoeuvres of 1889)
- Captain Arthur D. Fanshawe, 1 July, 1890[9] – 3 May, 1892[10]
- Captain William Wiseman, 22 July, 1890[11] – c. 20 August, 1890[Inference] (for Annual Manoeuvres of 1890)
- Captain George W. Hand, 3 May, 1893 – 27 June, 1894 (transferred in from Shannon)
- Captain Anson Schomberg, 5 July, 1894 – 29 March, 1895 (transferred out to Dreadnought)
- Captain James E. C. Goodrich, 15 June, 1897[12] (for Naval Review at Spithead)
- Captain Edward H. Bayly, 16 February, 1899[13] – 17 June, 1902
- Commander Henry H. Campbell, 22 April, 1903[14]
Mishaps
In October 1890, Aurora reported three cases where two different Mark VIII R.L. torpedoes, fired from two different Mark VII B. tubes broke a propellor blade. It happened a fourth time in January 1891! The ship was at anchor, and no marks within the tubes indicated contact with the propellors. Extensive testing indicated that a combination of small faults in the tube may have caused the props to strike the tripper. The trippers were shortened to suit.[15]
