The German system of naming their torpedo boats and Torpedo Boat Destroyers is somewhat unusual when compared to how other countries did things. Early designs were haphazardly named singletons and moderately small classes of torpedo boats. The naming scheme soon developed into numbered boats with initial letters indicating the builder, e.g., "G" for those built by Germaniawerft, "S" for boats built by Schichau-Werke, etc., with numbers being re-used by other builders.
By the 1890s, somewhat small destroyers were being built in increasingly large classes, but were still referred to as "torpedo boats".
List of classes
The earliest boats followed experiments with spar-torpedo boats whom we omit from this category. Germany built or contracted for delivery of roughly eighty torpedo boats of over twenty separate designs between 1873 and 1889.
