The Medical Director-General for the Royal Navy was formerly the rank of Inspector-General of Hospitals and Fleets.

On 25 February, 1888, James N. Dick, C.B. was appointed as Medical Director-General.[1] On 1 April, 1898, he was succeeded by Henry F. Norbury.[2] Norbury was succeeded by Inspector-General of Hospitals and Fleets Herbert M. Ellis on 12 September, 1904.[3] Ellis resigned[4] and was replaced by James Porter, C.B. on 11 May, 1908.[5] Surgeon-General William May, C.B. was appointed in succession to Sir James Porter on 11 May, 1913.[6]
