==Construction==
One of five large frigates with auxiliary steam propulsion ordered on 6 April, 1854.{{BauerRobertsRegister|p. 55}}  ''Colorado'' and her sister ''Roanoke'' were built to hull lines similar to those of the earlier {{US-Franklin}}.  Another influence on the design was the decision to use frames cut for unordered sisterships of the ''Congress'' of 1839.  Her engines were designed by Daniel B. Martin and contracted to Tredegar Iron Works of Richmond, Virginia.{{BauerRobertsRegister|p. 55}}
