In the [[Royal Navy]], a '''Captain of the Fleet''' was a designation bestowed upon the senior {{CaptRN}} in some Fleets or on some Stations.  It was not, in itself, a rank ''per se''.

The use of this title was sporadic within the service.  When [[Archibald Gordon Henry Wilson Moore|Archibald Moore]] was appointed as [[Captain of the Fleet (Royal Navy)|Captain of the Fleet]] to [[William Henry May|Sir William H. May]] in the Home Fleet in August, 1909, it was the first such appointment since 1871.<ref>''Hansard''. ==Permitted Retinue==
In 1888, a Captain of the Fleet was allotted the Secretary, Flag Lieutenant and Coxswain afforded all flag officers and Commdores, First Class, as well as two domestics.{{NLFeb88|p. 190}}
