U.S.S. G-4, laid down as U.S.S. Thrasher and renamed before launch, was one of four Seal (or "G") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.

She commissioned in the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 22 January, 1914 under the command of Lieutenant, Junior Grade E. D. McWhorter.
