U.S.S. Des Moines was one of six Denver Class protected cruisers completed for the U.S. Navy.

Des Moines was launched on 20 September, 1902 at Fore River Shipbuilding Company, sponsored by Miss E. Macomber. She was commissioned on 5 March, 1904 under the command of Commander Alexander McCrackin.
