Henry Hamilton
Captain Henry Hamilton, (18 May, 1892 – ) served in the Royal Navy in both World Wars.
Life & Career
The son of Rear-Admiral Frederick T. Hamilton.
At the outbreak of war, Hamilton was completing his Engine Room duty in the battleship Collingwood. On 29 March 1915 he was appointed to the light cruiser Comus, in which he was re-appointed upon his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1915. He remained in the cruiser until 6 May 1916 when he was appointed to the destroyer Myngs.[1]
On 9 February 1917 Hamilton was appointed to the destroyer Trident. He was mentioned in despatches by Commodore (T), Harwich Force for his services in action against enemy destroyers off the Belgian Coast on 5 June, 1917 in sinking the German torpedo boat S 20. This is a bit of a mystery, as that elderly T.B. was only scrapped after the war.[2]
Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1923.[3]
According to Captain Hunter in 1926, Hamilton was a "good turret officer and fair leader" who acted as Anti-Gas officer. Also a "keen jockey and polo player."[4]
Hamilton was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 18 May, 1932.[5]
World War II
Hamilton commanded H.M.S. Sayonara from September 1939 to July, 1941. He later served on the staff of the Flag Officer in Charge, Milford Haven.[6]
Hamilton was reverted to the Retired List on 7 October, 1945 and granted the war service rank of Captain.[7]
He was admitted to Plymouth Naval Hospital on 15 August, 1951 with dyspepsia.[8]
