Henry Francis Donhoff Jelf

Commander (retired) Henry Francis Donhoff Jelf, R.N. (27 August, 1877 – 18 April, 1944) served in the Royal Navy. Donhoff may have been Dönhoff. He seemed to suffer from a mental disease.

Life & Career

The son of R. J. Jelf, engineer was born in Aldershot.[1]

Jelf was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1899.[2]

Jelf was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1907.[3]

In mid-April 1910, he was invalided with a mental disease.

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 27 September, 1910.[4]

During the Great War, Jelf commanded H.M. Yachts from 4 August through November, 1914 when he was admitted to Haslar for mental observation. After a considerable delay, he was appointed for the Naval Depot, Immingham on 6 October, 1916. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 27 August, 1917. He reverted to the Retired List on 15 January, 1918.[5]
