Geoffrey Cecil Congreve

Commander (retired) Geoffrey Cecil Congreve, Bart., D.S.O., R.N. (19 July, 1897 – 28 July, 1941) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Lt. General Sir Congreve, V.C., K.C.B., M.V.O. was passed out of the Training Establishment on the outbreak of war and spent two months in Hannibal before being appointed to Benbow on 7 October. He remained in Benbow through 10 October, 1916, fighting in her at the Battle of Jutland.[1]

Congreve served in P12 from 10 October 1916. On 25 January, 1917, he was appointed to the destroyer Raider, in which he served until 29 March, 1919, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1918, adjusted from 15 September.[2]

Congreve was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1926.

Congreve was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 25 August, 1928. In December of that year, he was appointed DEputy Lieutenant for the County of Stafford. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 19 July, 1937.[3]

World War II

Congreve performed demolition work at Brest and then provided service in and near Narvik.[4]

He spent some time in command of the Dutch vessel Jupiter before being appointed for duty inside the Admiralty on 14 June, 1941. He died in action on 28 July, 1941.[5]
