Admiral the Earl of Clanwilliam, K.C.B, K.C.M.G The Earl of Clanwilliam, the distinguished officer whom Sir Nowell Salmon succeeded two years ago as Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth, entered the Royal Navy in 1845 at the age of thirteen. As a lieutenant he saw service in the Russian war, in the frigate “Imperieuse” attached to the Baltic Fleet, and after that in the China war of 1857. He was in the fight at escape Creek, at the destruction of the Chinese war-junk flotilla at Fatshan, and at the capture of Canton, where Lord Clanwilliam had his arm broken by a gingal ball. For these services he was specially mentioned in dispatches and promoted. Lord Clanwilliam, from 1874 to 1990, was a Lord of the Admiralty. During the years 1880-82 he was Commander-in-Chief of the Flyiong Squadron, and three years later he assumed the Command-in-Chief on the North American and West indies Station. The chief command at Portsmouth he held from 1891 to 1894. Lord Clanwilliam, as a captain, between the years 1872 and 1876 was A.D.C to the Queen. N&AI May 1st 1896
