The caption for this photograph, published in the Navy & Army Illustrated in March 1896, reads "Rear-Admiral Alfred Taylor Dale, who commands the Flying Squadron, is in his fifty-sixth year, although he looks and is in spirit and activity a much younger man. He first saw service at the capture of the Peiho Forts in the China war. As a lieutenant he held the Beaufort Testimonial for Navigation. As a Captain (in the uniform of which the photograph shows Admiral Dale), he was A.D.C to the Queen, and , during Lord George Hamilton’s Administration, Private Secretary to the First Lord at Whitehall. He has been on the flag list since September 1891, and in 1894 was second in command of the Channel Squadron".
