Engineer Rear-Admiral (Royal Navy)
From 1 April, 1903, Chief Inspectors of Machinery were styled Engineer Rear-Admiral. The new rank ranked with Rear-Admirals, so in effect all Chief Inspectors of Machinery received an advance in rank of one step.
The qualification for Engineer Rear-Admiral as given in the 1913 King's Regulations and Admiralty Instructions were:
277. Engineer Rear-Admiral.—The qualification for Engineer Rear-Admiral is long and meritorious service.
