Cyril John Laugham Noakes
Commander Cyril John Laugham Noakes, D.S.O. (2 September, 1884 – ) served in the Royal Navy. His brother, Arthur Laugham Noakes, also served in the Navy.
Life & Career
Noakes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1906.[1]
In December, 1910, Noakes provided creditable service in a search party during a skirmish in Dubai. The following month, it was determined that this should enhance his consideration in promotions.[2]
On 26 May, 1911, he was admitted to Haslar Hospital with an impacted wisdom tooth. He was fit two days later. On 25 July 1911, he married Ethel Lilian May Hammond at the Cliftonville Congregational Church.[3]
Noakes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1914.[4]
Great War
On 25 August, 1917, Noakes applied to be attached to a "special service", or Q-ship.
Noakes was awarded a D.S.O. for destroying the German submarine U 64 between Sardinia and Sicily on 17 June, 1918 – an accomplishment borne out by post-war German records.[5]
Interbellum
Noakes was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.[6]
Noakes was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 November, 1922..[7]
World War II
Appointed to Afrikander IV in command and as Naval Officer in Charge, Durban on 27 August, 1939 with the acting rank of Captain.
On 19 May, 1941 he was made Commander of the Dockyard, Falmouth.
Noakes was reverted to the Retired List on 18 April, 1942.
