Archer Meredith Ruland Allen

Captain Archer Meredith Ruland Allen, (20 November, 1884 – 23 November, 1974) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Allen was born in Massachusetts and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state. He graduated with the Class of 1908 and was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 6 June 1910. He was appointed to his first command early on in his career, commanding torpedo boat Bailey from 1910 to 1912.[1]

Allen earned the usual early-career promotions,being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 6 June, 1913[2] and to the rank of Lieutenant on 29 August, 1916.[3]

Great War

During World War I, Allen served as Aide to the Commandant of Naval Station Cavite in the Philippines. He was promoted to the temporary rank of Lieutenant Commander on 15 October, 1917 while in this assignment.[4]

Interwar Period

Following the war, Allen saw service ashore and on numerous battleships, being promoted to the permanent rank of Lieutenant Commander on 8 June, 1920[5] and to the rank of Commander on 4 June, 1925.[6]

In 1928, Allen was appointed to command destroyer Stoddert and held this command to May 1930.[7]

During the 1930's, Allen commanded a destroyer division and the heavy cruiser Salt Lake City. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1936.[8] [9]

World War II

During World War II, he served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and in the Pacific Theater in a logistics role. He was placed on the Retired List due to incapacity incident to the service on 1 August, 1946 and died in California in 1974.[10]
