Chatham Royal Dockyard was one of the Royal Navy's major shipyards from Elizabethan times until its closure in 1984. It formed, with Sheerness Royal Dockyard, part of the Nore Command, on the Medway. With Portsmouth and Plymouth it was one of the navy's three Home Ports. In the twentieth century it became the navy's main submarine dockyard.

History

In early 1895, the Medway Fleet Reserve sounded the alarm that it was finding it difficult to obtain the berthing space that would be required to accommodate the fourteen torpedo boat destroyers that were expected to be delivered shortly from the contractors.[1]

The Dockyard had a Captain Superintendent until Charles Fellowes was re-appointed as an Admiral Superintendent in 1876.
