Warship Quarterly

Warship started out as a quarterly publication of historical and technical essays of incredible value and merit to serious students of fighting ships. While it has in recent years moved to an annual format, it remains the "periodical" that deserves a space on your reference bookshelf long after it has been read the first time. It is the scholarly companion to more accessible publications such as Naval History, acting as Scientific American to their Popular Science and focusing more on the machinery and technology and less on the human side of naval conflict, although this is not a dogmatic characteristic.

The Best and the Brightest

The editors and contributors to Warship are many, but it is the rare heavy-hitter who is not featured in the editions. Prominent among them are John Jordan, Pierre Hervieux, John Roberts, David K Brown, David Lyon, Norman Friedman, N J M Campbell, Antony Preston, and John Lambert.. to name just the ones I am most familiar with. Moreover, the entire body of submissions is shaped by the editorial oversight of these people, and the result is usually impressive and informative research clearly presented.

Publication History

The first quarterly issue, Warship No 1, was published in 1977 by Conway Maritime Press. After some time, as the number of quarterly issues grew, Conway started printing annual sets of 4 issues in numbered volumes marked by Roman numerals with the sole exception of the first (Volume 1 contains 1977's issues No 1 through No 4, Volume X contains 1986's issues No 37 through No 40). The Naval Institute Press has helped Conway Maritime Press print and distribute some volumes, but in recent years the spines seem to indicate Conway Maritime Press alone.

During 1987 or shortly after, the quarterly became an annual publication, with the volumes switching to carry the year of their publication in their name, e.g.: "Warship 1989". The quarterly volumes, of course, disapeared. In 1997 or so, another minor change occurred, with the volumes carrying two years in their titles, though the volumes continued to appear one per year (i.e.: there is both a "Warship 1999-2000" and a "Warship 2000-2001".

What is in Warship, and in which Issue or Volume?

The problem posed by Warship is the somewhat scarce nature of the editions, and knowing what is in each. There are incredible resources contained within its corpus, but the lack of a published index hampers it from delivering fully to its potential as a research repository.

The Dreadnought Project's resource collection includes 18 volumes of the 23 published up to Warship 2000-2001. The following index covers each of the volumes I have catalogued, with an occasional note on articles I has found especially valuable. I'd really value your help in locating volumes I am missing so I can complete the collection, or to have you supply the index for any volume you possess which is not here represented.
