Capstan

This capstan is suitable for manual handling of small anchors (e.g.: 15 cwt and 18 cwt). I presume that the square mouths on it received long levers worked by teams of men. Possibly, a clutched ratchet mechanism allowed safe, incremental raising/lowering of the anchors without fear of runaway.

Special Installation Instructions

The capstan itself should be placed on the deck the same as any Upright Deck Fitting.

The radial ridges (which I think were to give the crew better footing) should be individually oriented to the deck by use of two placement lines (one at each end), owing to their considerable length relative to the deck arching beneath them. An expedient may be found in individually placing only half the strakes, and mirroring them to the other side of the symmetrical deck.

Notes

This fitting could doubtless be improved. It is difficult to tell if all fittings of the same size/function would be of the exact same design. I am not sure what attachment it would have at the deck level.

This item would likely be painted steel, but that is Tone's guess. I am also not sure that the radial ridges were Teak.
